When we’re out and about in our neighborhoods, looking for great examples of Bucks County landscape design, we see properties whose owners put a lot of thought into their look and feel.

Are you looking for ways to improve your home’s landscaping? Start with these tips.

1. Front yard first

When giving your landscape design a makeover, start with the first thing visitors will see: the front of your property.

But this is about more than just a home that looks pretty. As we go forward, you’ll see that everything we recommend has a function as well as aesthetic value.

Start by taking care of your hardscaping projects before you put down any plants. Whether you’re adding a new walkway, driveway or fencing, you’ll need to do the type of construction that can tear up your turf and disrupt your plants.

2. Planning your plants

Before you do any planting, take a good look at the landscape of your property in relation to where the sun shines.

Some plants thrive in the morning sun but can’t handle brighter light as the sun moves west. And other plants – including herbs, roses, and vegetables – need a significant amount of light, so plant with care.

You should also have a good idea of how large a shrub or a tree will grow before you put it in the ground. If you have a smaller yard, you’ll want to stay away from tree varieties such as oak, magnolia, red maple and sugar maple.

3. In the garden

Once you’re ready to plant, take some time to enhance the health of your soil by adding organic matter such as peat moss, mushroom compost or shredded pine bark. When your soil is loose and fertile, your plants will have an easier time thriving and taking root.

Plant new shrubs and small trees close to your house, in front of first-floor windows and close to the porch. Keep larger shrubs near the corner of your home, which help soften the squared-off look of your house. Top things off with a flower bed up front to add some color.

4. In the backyard

While the front of your property is the public face of your home, the backyard is all about privacy. It’s a place where you and those closest to you can kick back and relax.

Putting up a deck or installing a patio gives you a great place to have dinner or just hang out with friends, while also offering space for overflow guests when you have parties and other gatherings.

You can enhance these gatherings by adding a fire feature to your backyard, allowing you to spend more time outdoors even when the air becomes chilly.

If you need extra backyard privacy, talk to your Bucks County landscape design company about adding fencing or larger shrubs.

5. Maintaining your landscape

Once you’ve gotten your landscape the way you want it, you’ll need to keep it well-maintained. That means doing things like:

  • Regular raking and sweeping
  • Clearing your garden, lawn and plant beds of weeds
  • Checking plants for pests and signs of disease
  • Washing pathways, walls and garden structures
  • Keeping your outdoor furniture in good condition

In other words, take care of your landscaping, and it will take care of you. Woodward Landscape Supply can help you with this job.
